The new sedan’s price barely undercuts that of the $36,995 Lexus ES350, its key competition; the no-extra-cost hybrid model slides in a significant $2945 less than the $39,745 commanded by the ES300h hybrid. The four-cylinder MKZ’s estimated 22-mpg city and 33-mpg highway fuel-economy numbers better the ES350′s 21/31 figures, but Lincoln has yet to reveal estimates for the front-drive V-6 model. BMW’s $100-million venture-capital fund, i Ventures, has just made an investment in Coulomb Technologies, the company that operates ChargePoint, the largest online global network of EV charging stations. This isn’t just a business deal; the move points to BMW’s product intentions for the U.S.
The aim for the buy—details of which still are under wraps, for the time being—is to “offer reliable access to public charging” for BMW customers, says Dr. Ulrich Quay, who heads up the fund. With only about 700 BMW ActiveE cars on the road (those are the EV version of the 1-series), the move strengthens BMW’s position in advance of launching the carbon-fiber i3 city car. “It’s coming next year, 2013,” Dr. Quay explains, dispelling some rumors that BMW was getting cold feet about introducing its i sub-brand in the U.S. The mid-engined i8 sports car is slated for 2014.

Coulomb operates the ChargePoint network a bit differently than you’d expect. Sales and installation of the actual EV charging stations—which look a little like old-school vertical gas pumps—are handled by distributors. In fact, ChargePoint will work with stations built by a number of different manufacturers. ChargePoint ends up being a brand name on the stations, a system for finding available spots in which to charge, and a method of paying.

What It Is: The worst-kept secret in the industry. Porsche whets our appetite and draws further attention to its 918 hybrid supercar with a Martini Racing sticker kit. It is far more expensive and powerful than any 911; think modern-day Carrera GT. The car is inching toward production and the styling is finalized, although details such as the production taillights are still missing. (We’ve had a chance to go for a ride in a prototype version of the 918 and found the car to be pretty impressive.) As a bonus, these pictures show two-time rally world champion Walter Röhrl at the wheel; he’s not the biggest fan of hybrids. Will the 918 convert him?
Why It Matters: The 918, a pet project of former Porsche R&D chief Wolfgang Dürheimer, is a technology showcase that allows the brand to experiment with the application of highly advanced hybrid technology. Three torque sources—two electric motors and an internal-combustion engine—will work in concert to achieve “record-setting” performance. The 918 also is supposed to trigger interest in and acceptance for hybrid technology among sports-car enthusiasts, many of whom still are wary of electron-fed propulsion.
Platform: The Porsche 918 uses a standalone, mid-engine platform that shares only a few parts with the 911 and the Boxster and Cayman. Down the road, the architecture could be adopted for a conventionally powered supercar positioned between the 911 and the 918.

Powertrain: The 918 will be powered by a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8 that boasts 570 hp and a 9000-plus-rpm redline. An electric motor at the rear axle makes around 120 hp, while the electric motor up front generates around 110 hp. Porsche promises total system power of at least 770 hp.

What Might Go Wrong: We are sure Porsche’s R&D team will master the extreme technical challenges, but market success is another topic. Porsche says that up to 918 units will be made; if they sell quickly, a fixed-roof version (this one has a removable top) could follow, and a 918 RSR could go racing.
Estimated Arrival and Price: The Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid will go into production at 9:18 a.m. on September 18, 2013. Deliveries should begin by early 2014, at a price around $850,000. Martini Racing livery, we suspect, will be on you.

We wouldn’t say “production ready,” but we will say this: Wow.

The cop is clearly pushing his Crown Victoria police interceptor, but he can’t lose us—his lights are flashing wildly; he pulls ahead on the straightaways, but we catch up in the corners. Several miles up Mulholland Highway northwest of Los Angeles, he’s had enough. The officer yanks his cruiser around and blocks the road. Our drive is over. But as we get out of the car, he flashes a big smile. This time, the law is on our side.
The police are here at Audi’s behest to secure the road and make sure our ride, the tangible offspring of a project worth between $6.5 million and $13 million, will remain unscathed by fellow motorists. The e-tron Spyder debuted at last year’s Paris auto show alongside the Quattro concept—which we’ve also driven. The Quattro is based on a shortened RS5 platform and powered by a 2.5-liter turbo, but the e-tron Spyder rides on a bespoke chassis that borrows only its rear suspension and brakes from another Audi, the R8. Far from being art for art’s sake, however, it showcases technical and stylistic approaches that could define future Audis.
Diesel and Electric (and Could Pull Like a Locomotive)

One of these ideas is demonstrated by the powertrain: The e-tron Spyder drives its rear wheels with a midship-mounted, twin-turbocharged diesel V-6 good for 300 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. The front wheels are powered by a pair of electric motors that combine for 88 hp and 260 lb-ft. Audi is hopeful that, despite their extra weight, electric motors employed in this manner will make cars more agile, as they can apply torque with extreme precision and celerity.
On paper, the target weight of this prototype is 3197 pounds, and its transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch. In reality, the e-tron Spyder weighs 3638 pounds and has a CVT. To avoid frying the rubber-band box, Audi has reduced the diesel’s torque to 280 lb-ft. Additionally, the car is limited to about 40 mph—the aluminum wheels with their carbon insets are, after all, one-off show pieces—which explains why the Crown Vic was working so hard. Even with such dramatic handicaps, the e-tron Spyder is rewarding. This sleek concept launches like a brute, the thrust accompanied by the deep growl of the diesel and the hiss of the turbochargers.
We also tried out electric operation, which was by no means sluggish but not nearly as impressive as diesel mode. Combined diesel and electric propulsion wasn’t an option. This is a concept car; that we were allowed to drive it at all is unusual. We loved it with the diesel alone and can only imagine how this car would scoot in theoretical production trim more than 400 pounds lighter, with the diesel at full power and the extra assistance of the torquey electric motors. Audi says it could do 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds and reach a governed top speed of 155 mph. Why not?
If Only We Could Go Faster
The chassis matches the powertrain’s performance. It’s agile and neutral and remains entirely composed even during aggressive cornering in Mulholland’s tightest bends, where 40 mph is actually pushing it. The electric power steering is a bit too effortless, but again, this is a prototype—that some Teamster isn’t kneeling alongside it jerking the wheels back and forth to affect directional changes on the show stand is something of a novelty. As we exit the ultra-tight corners on Mulholland and push the accelerator, the vicious pull forward repeatedly plasters a smile on our faces.
Beyond the diesel-electric powertrain, the e-tron Spyder points the way to a possible mid-engined sports car positioned between the TT and R8. The elegant shape, penned by Wolfram Luchner (who is now at General Motors), is one of several ideas for an expansion of Audi’s lineup and stands among our favorites. We doubt, however, that cops will be all smiles if we ever encounter them in the real thing.

2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Spy Photos

 
Update 2/27: We’ve received a fresh batch of photos depicting the camouflaged C7 Corvette, again taken while the car was undergoing cold-weather testing. Although we’re sticking with our original assessment that the C7’s redesign will be more evolutionary than revolutionary, the new images bring a couple of details into focus: First, an array of LED running lights appear to be hiding in the headlight clusters and, second, the B-pillar looks as if it’s going to be thicker and perhaps flow into a more traditional sail panel. If the latter proves accurate, it follows that the wraparound rear glass of the current Vette will be abandoned. Even under the heavily padded camo, careful examination indicates the new backlight rests at a less severe degree of rake than the current model’s. Read on for the rest of what we know about the C7.

Here’s what we know about the next Chevrolet Corvette.

Chassis: As we’ve said before—and as these photos prove—nothing so drastic as a switch to a mid-engine layout was planned for the C7. The Vette will remain a front-engine, rear-transaxle sports car (until the C8 arrives, anyway). Something similar to the current car’s suspension, transverse leaf springs and all, will appear on this 2014 model. We also don’t expect any drastic dimensional changes; while mules we spotted in September appeared to have a narrower track, their bodies were donated by C6 Grand Sports, which have wider fenders and tracks than do base Corvettes. The C7 is likely to shed some mass, which will of course yield a better power-to-weight figure.

Design: We’re going to go out on a limb and call it Vette-like. New headlight elements are more complex and narrower. The double-bubble roof returns, although the space between the bumps is wider and the panel appears to be slightly flatter. There’s mesh covering the hood, which suggests some sort of ventilation—either louvers or something like the scoop that adorns the nose of the current Z06, Grand Sport, and ZR1. Oh, and the side mirrors are less-rounded than before and are a bit larger.

Among the critical details hidden by the camo is final shape of the rear end, which GM has taken care to cover up. Although this winter coat makes it appear as though the shape of the tail is mostly the same, we’re fairly confident there’s more of a boat-tail look back there. The extra padding also makes it difficult to tell whether the rear overhang is longer. And while the car’s signature round taillights are sure to return, the sizing and spacing suggested by the shroud are probably meant to throw us off. The quad exhaust tips, which appeared as slightly separated pairs on the C6, are now bundled together in a row.

Powertrain: As for the source of the power, we expect to see more-significant changes under the hood. GM already has invested nearly $1 billion in the American plants that produce its small-block V-8, and the fifth generation of the iconic engine family will appear in the C7. Downsizing is almost a given for efficiency reasons, so expect a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter (possibly 6.0-liter) mill in place of the current 6.2 in the base model. (The oft-rumored twin-turbo V-6? We’re thinking C8.) The smaller engine will continue to use an aluminum block with pushrods, and should make roughly the same 430 hp as the current 6.2; it will do so, however, thanks in part to a higher compression ratio and direct fuel injection. The V-8 also is expected to feature cylinder deactivation, some sort of variable valve timing, and perhaps even stop-start functionality—the latter not exactly ideal for stoplight tête-à-têtes. Finally, the Z06 and ZR1 models—with their respective larger and supercharged eights—should return.

Timing: Chevrolet is keeping a very tight lid on all things Corvette, but the C7 ought to debut as a 2014 model sometime in 2013. (We’ve heard rumbles of a fall on-sale date.) Prices shouldn’t change much from current levels, with the base car starting in the neighborhood of $50,000.

Kia Contacting It is New K9 Rear-Drive Flagship “Quoris” Outside Korea [Photos]

Kia has announced that it is naming its rear-drive flagship K9 sedan “Quoris” in non-Korean, global markets. The company says it is still evaluating whether it will bring the car here to the U.S., but we know it’s coming sometime next year, likely as a 2013 model. That means the sedan probably will be called Quoris here, too, since we aren’t in, uh, Korea.

While we knew Kia was going to rename the K9 before sending it to different markets, we weren’t expecting such a strange moniker. What’s a Quoris? We couldn’t tell you—but we can throw out a few guesses as to what it isn’t. It isn’t a row of backup singers, and it certainly isn’t catchy or pleasant-sounding.

Regardless of what kind of imagery the name conjures, at least the Quoris’s bodywork isn’t too hard to look at. The photos you see here and in the gallery below are of some K9-badged prototypes we recently stumbled on while they were undergoing testing in the States. In the metal, the car looks just as generic and BMW 5/6/7-series–like as it does in photos. The fender vents resemble Maserati’s portholes, and the big Kia’s profile recalls that of the Hyundai Sonata. The global-market Quoris is expected to go on sale in the fall of this year, but if it comes to the U.S. it won’t be for another few months after that.

Today, Audi released pricing for the lightweight R8 GT sports car’s droptop Spyder iteration and revealed how many cars from the 333-unit production run will be allocated for the U.S. market. First, the cost: The 2012 GT Spyder will start at $213,350, including gas-guzzler tax. This gives it the distinction of being the most expensive R8 variant available. The nearly identical—save for the roof—GT coupe previously held that title, with a base sticker $13,200 less than the GT Spyder’s. For reference, the topless GT commands a $38,300 premium over the V-10 R8 Spyder 5.2 with the R tronic automated manual transmission.
Like the GT coupe, the Spyder is lighter and more powerful than its R8 5.2 counterpart; its V-10 engine puts out 560 hp (35 more hp than the standard R8 5.2 Spyder’s), and the whole car weighs about 100 fewer pounds. However, because the R8 Spyder is heavier than the coupe to begin with, the GT Spyder’s weight savings pretty much bring it down into non-GT coupe territory. Besides a reduction in weight, the GT Spyder gets a stiffened and lowered suspension, a larger rear diffuser, an aggressive front splitter, a fixed rear spoiler, and 19-inch wheels. It also gets Audi’s single-clutch R tronic automated manual standard, which is much less fun than the gated six-speed manual that is available in non-GT R8s. If you’re interested in snagging one of the limited-edition R8 GT Spyders for yourself, we suggest you hurry—Audi’s only sending us 50 of the 333 units slated for production.

Audi R8 e-tron Sets “World-Record” Lap Time at the Nürburgring

Audi took the R8 e-tron electric supercar to the Nürburgring and all it got was a lousy lap record, circuiting the Green Hell in 8 minutes, 9 seconds. Impressive, right? The time is for sure, but the record maybe not so much: It’s claimed for production EVs, a thin group that seemingly includes, well, just the e-tron.
Audi’s silent-running supercar packs a total of 376 hp and 605 lb-ft from its two electric motors, and the company claims it can hit 60 mph in roughly 4.5 seconds. The lithium-ion battery pack stores a whopping 49 kWh of juice—a Nissan Leaf packs 24 kWh and is actually a little longer than a standard R8—good enough, Audi says, for a maximum range of more than 130 miles. We’re thinking that a hard lap of the ’Ring cuts pretty seriously into that figure, though.
Audi’s wheelman was Markus Winkelhock, whose time bested the 9:51 posted by a race-prepped Mini E called the, er, E-Race, as well as the 9:01 turned in by Peugeot’s wicked EX1 concept car. The e-tron is not, however, the fastest vehicle with full-electric drive, as the TMG EV P001—a race car built by Toyota Motorsport GmbH—lapped the fabled track in 7 minutes, 47 second
